Do Your Ducts Need Cleaning?

Your HVAC system works hard at keeping your home comfortable, but there are many air pollutants in the average home that can cause issues with the cleanliness of the system over time. One of the largest and most important components of an HVAC system is your ductwork system. All the air in your home is pushed through the ducts in order to make its way throughout the house newly conditioned. All those pollutants not caught by your filter will make their way into your ductwork over time. Your ductwork is a sealed system so how do you know if they are in need of a cleaning?

Use Your Eyes

One of the most important things you can do as a homeowner is to keep a literal eye on things! By watching the vents as your HVAC system kicks on you can see if it coughs out dust and debris. This is a very clear sign that there is an excess of dust built up in your ductwork. Another sign is hair, dirt and debris on or around vents on walls, the ceilings or floors.

Use Your Ears

Listen to the sounds your system is making when running. If it is making any whistling, rattling or excessive noise that is a pretty clear sign that the system may have a blockage. A system with a clean duct system should only make a blowing sound from moving air and a humming from the blower motor.

Check Your Filters

If you find yourself regularly having a blocked filter even if you change it regularly, that could be a sign that your ducts are in need of cleaning.

Adequate Airflow

A running HVAC system should be producing airflow through the vents. If you notice that your vents are not putting out adequate airflow, check to make sure there are no blockages or obstructions in your registers or vent pathways, if not you probably need to have your ducts cleaned.

If you suspect that your ducts need cleaning, it is best to consult a professional for a full assessment. To discuss your concerns on this or any additional issues call Dayton Heating and Air today to speak to a Newberry local expert technician at 352-474-COOL.
